Referring to the enclosure in

Your Lordship's Despatch No. 252 of the 29th. December

last, regarding the Clock Tower which it is proposed to

place upon the new Post Office Buildings, I have the honour

to state that it was not possible to give effect to Messrs.

Aston

Webb and Ingress Bell's suggestion that the Tower

should be placed at the angle of the Block, as the found-

-ations, which have been completed, were not sufficiently

strong at that point to bear the additional weight.

I was not entirely satisfied, as

I pointed out in the 4th. paragraph of my Despatch No. 268

of the 3rd. November last, with the design of the Tower 05

originally proposed, and I have now selected from further

alternative drawings, which I caused to be prepared, the

enclosed design of a structure somewhat lighter in appear-

-ance,

which will I consider be more in harmony with the

buildings
